1. Soak up any spill with an absorbent white cloth immediately. When doing so, blot or tamp the spot (Rubbing side to side is not recommended, it may cause the spill to spread or distort the fibers in your carpeting).
2. Make a cleaning solution by mixing 3 ounces of white vinegar with 29 ounces of water. This will fill an ordinary 32-ounce spray bottle.
3. After absorbing as much of the spill as possible, spritz down the area with the vinegar and water solution. Leave it to soak on the area for 30 seconds to one minute before blotting or tamping it up with a new white cloth.
4. Allow area to dry completely, then vacuum thoroughly. If there are traces of the spot remaining, repeat steps 3 and 4.
A Google search can turn up a multitude of suggestions, many of them ineffective at best, damaging at worst. It’s hard to know which ideas to try, and which to avoid. Vinegar and water is both the safest, and only, cleaning solution we recommend. Other products may create a permanent stain that cannot be removed, only repaired.
